Bayon is one of the most beautiful and most mysterious of the temples of Angkor. It was built in 13 century for the King Jayavarman VII, is at the center of its capital, Angkor Thom. The most distinctive feature of all the other temples is a lot of smiling faces on the towers, which rise up to its central peak. Bayon also has two sets of bas-reliefs, which give the unusual combination of mythological, historical and mundane events. Bayon is even called the most vivid expression of baroque style in comparison with the classical style of Angkor Wat.

Bayon was the last temples built in Angkor, and was the central object in the construction program of Jayavarman VII, the similarity of the towers with a statue of King led many scientists to conclude that persons in some parts represent the King Jayavarman VII, but does not exclude the possibility of Avalokiteshvara . Bayon is oriented to the east, its facilities are situated in the western direction inside the body and elongated along the east-west axis. Bayon has no walls and ditches, and the total area of the city of Angkor Thom gets more than Angkor Wat. In the Bayon there are two gallery hulls in the upper terrace.
