Media in Cambodia has improved

Over the past year the Cambodian media made a significant breakthrough. Quantity and quality of the media in Cambodia in 2009 increased significantly that such a statement was made by Minister of Information Kew Canaria. According to him, now in the country operates 385 national newspapers, 172 national magazine, 43 international newspapers, 28 international journals, 10 international newspapers, 11 international news agencies, 21 journalists' associations, 133 printers and six publishing holdings. "The press and electronic media made a significant breakthrough. They provide the freedom of speech in society, without which there can be no democracy "- said Mr. Canario.

At the same time, in a recent report of the international organization Reporters Without Borders expressed concern about cases of persecution of the Khmer Journalists. In particular, in July 2009 on charges of libel, was arrested on a well-known publisher Hang Chakra. This decision was contrary to the words of Prime Minister Hun Sen, who in 2006 publicly stated that it was impossible to prosecute journalists for what they write.
