SAFETY AND SECURITY: The American State Department is concerned that individuals and groups may be planning terrorist actions against U.S. citizens and interests, as well as sites frequented by Westerners in Southeast Asia, including in Cambodia.

Terrorist groups present in Southeast Asia have transnational capabilities to carry out attacks against locations where tourist congregate. Westerners citizens going to Cambodia should therefore exercise caution in clubs, discos, bars, restaurants, hotels, places of worship, schools, outdoor recreation venues, tourist areas, beach resorts, and other places frequented by foreigners.

Although the political situation is now relatively stable, Cambodian political activities have turned mean before, and it's possible for politically-motivated fighting remains. On January 2, 2009, three explosive devices were found near the Ministry of National Defense in central Phnom Penh.

Five suspects are facing charges related to the incident.
