Cambodia's administrative territorial division consists of 23 provinces (khet, Khmer) and 1 city under central authority (Krong, Khmer). The provinces in turn are divided into smaller subdivisions, county (term), Comun (khom) which combines the several hundred villages. Municipalities are divided into districts (Kham), which are divided into districts (Sangkat) and further sections (Krom).

22 December 2008 King of Cambodia, Narodomom Sihamoni signed a decree on the revision of boundaries in some provinces, bringing the city Kep, Pailin, and Sihanoukville city under central authority passed into the status of provinces.

Today the only city under the central government is Phnom Penh.
