Siem Reap (Siem Reap) is the province that is situated in the northwest of Cambodia, on the shores of Lake Tonle Sap, the largest reservoir in South-East Asia. Siem Reap is a major tourist attraction in Cambodia, it is the closest city to the world famous temples of Angkor (the Angkor temple complex to the north of the city). The provincial capital is also called Siem Reap and is located in the southern part of the province. The city's name literally means "Siamese defeated", referring to the victory over the Thai Cambodian army in 17 century.

At the turn of the millennium Siem Reap was a Cambodian provincial town with several hotels and bad roads. But the proximity to Angkor, which has become very popular among tourists, gave a push to the development of huge Siem Ripa what happened just a half decades. In Siem Reap appeared huge luxury hotels, budget hotels are mushrooming.

Property prices in Siem Reap flew to European levels, and tourism has become a large profitable region. Siem Reap today is not recognizable from the Siem Ripa in 2000. But all is not very good sum for people in the province of Siem Reap, because they are forced to pay more in the central market, as prices are rising and the level of their income from subsistence farming and fishing remains the same. In Siem Reap, only 10 percent of the population employed in the tourism business.

Geography and population

Siem Reap Province covers an area of 10299 square kilometers. It is located in the north-western part of the country, and is bordered on the north by Oddar, east of Preah Vihear and Kompong Thom, Banteay Meanchey to the west and south to Lake Tonle Sap. Siem Reap province mainly consists of flat terrain with large areas designated for rice fields and other agricultural plantations. In the northern part of Siem Ripa is a small hill covered with tropical forests.

The current population of the province of Siem Reap is about 903,030 persons, or 6.3% of the total population. The population density in Siem Reap is quite high and is 87.7 persons per square kilometer.

Economy

Business in Siem Ripa is entirely dependent on tourism, with regard to the location in the province of world famous Angkor temple complex. Since 2000, economic growth in Siem Reap has increased several times, and an annual tourist flow of over 1 million people, which naturally leads to develop the hotel and restaurant business, the construction of good roads, entertainment centers and the transportation system Siem Ripa.

In addition to the tourism in the province of Siem Reap the people are engaged in commercial fishing and every year thousands of tonnes of fish are exported to other provinces in Cambodia, and even outside the country. Crops in Siem Reap are grown for domestic use and export of the province almost delivered.
