A special place is a lyric poem "Indradevi" and the epic "Reamker" in explanation of the Indian Ramayana, written in Khmer.

The most significant phenomenon in the literature so-called middle period (1434-1862) was a folk-tale poem "Tum and Teau" (15 cent.) About the tragic love of boys and girls. Writers Sottana Preytea al, SAMO Lot, Well Kahn and others continued to create works of traditional and French colonial regime (1863-1953). One of the best works of this time-poem "Sratop Tek" Bamrae Utey Ngynga written on the material of the ancient tales. In the 30's and 40's. there are first novels, characterized by a humanistic orientation: "Paylinskaya Rose" (1936) gnocchi Thaema, "Sophat" (1938) Eye Keane and withered flower "(1947) Well Hatya. In 1955, shortly after independence, was formed Union of Khmer writers.
