Angkor means "capital" or "Holy Khmer city" and refers to the dominant ethnic group in the present and ancient Cambodia. In it's present the name refers to the capital of Angkor Khmer Empire, which existed between 9 and 13 centuries before our era. The ruins of the temples in Siem Ripa are the remains of the city of Angkor, and represent the top of the ancient Khmer architecture and art.

At one time, Angkor was the capital, is home to more than one million people, with the most complex plumbing systems and magnificent temples. Angkor had a military, economic and cultural domination, and prevailed over all areas of modern Cambodia as well as over some areas of Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.
