A mysterious temple complex of Angkor Thom was the last Khmer capital of the empire. It was established in the late twelfth century by King DzhayavarmanomVII. Angkor Thom covers an area of 9 km ², within which there are several churches from previous eras, as well as established Dzhayavarmanom king and his successors.

Angkor Thom was established as the capital of the empire DzhayavarmanaVII, and has held a central place in its construction program. The city was found an inscription referring to Dzhayavarmanu, which stated that it applies to Angkor Thom as the groom belongs to his fiancee. The most prominent temples in the Angkor Thom are Baphuon and Rimeanakas, which were included in the royal palace. The last temple constructions in Angkor Thom was Mangalatha in 1295. After this, the existing structures from time to time continued to make changes, but any new creation was a short-lived materials and has not survived. In later centuries, Angkor Thom remained the capital of the kingdom in decline, until it was abandoned in early 17 th century, and some Western travelers reported that the city uninhabited and fell as a "fantastic Atlantis of Plato.

Angkor Thom was built in the style of Bayona. This is manifested in large scale construction, and use of laterite, the towers of the persons on each of the entrances to the city and the giant figures of the Nagas, which accompany each of the towers.

The South Gate of Angkor Thom are 7,2 km north of Siem Ripa, and 1,7 km north of the entrance to Angkor Wat. The height of the wall is 8 meters in the surrounding moat, and each about 3 km long. On each side there are the gates from which there are roads to the Bayon and the city center. Other gates in the form of a triumphal arch located 500 meters from the eastern gate: the road runs parallel to the road east to Victory Square. Gate leading to Angkor Thom 23m in height and are later additions to the basic structure.
