Cambodia History
End of era
Despite the fact that building construction was halted, Angkor remained active for many years. Hinduism returned to Cambodia in Dzhayavarmane VIII in the late 13 century, and this time the majority of Buddhist monuments of Angkor were spoiled. You can find chipped Buddha images in almost all Buddhist monuments of Jayavarman VII. Thousands of images of Buddha have been desecrated, this was attached with a huge amount of effort. Another interesting fact is that some of the images of Buddha have been grossly altered Hindu lingams and bodhisattav. There are several good examples of changes of images on Ta Prohm and Preah Khan.
Apogee Khmer Empire of Angkor
This was the era of territorial, political and commercial expansion after the return of capital to Angkor. The Kingdom flourished and was built several large monuments, including Ta Keo, Banteay Srey, Baphuon and western Baray. Kings of Angkor during this period of stepped up military capacity and implement a successful military campaign against the enemy east of Champa in the mid 10 th century. Immediately after the turn of the new millennium, came a nine-year period of political turmoil, which ended when King Suryavarman took firm control of Angkor in 1010. In the following decade he undertook many important military victories, including the conquest of territory in the west, much of present-day Thailand, resulting in the entire western part of Funai had taken control of Cambodia. A century later, King Suryavarman II will hold a series of successful military campaigns against the traditional enemies of the Khmer Ciampi, in central and southern Vietnam.
802 Years: The reference point
Jayavarman II was the first king of Angkor, its origins in the history described in the legend. He was a Khmer prince, in 790, he returned to Cambodia and as nuchal and a good politician conquered all Cambodian principalities and announced a single sovereign Cambodia. He did this at a ceremony in Phnom Kulen north-east of Siem Ripa in the year 802, and ibid held a ceremony, "God-King", which legalized its single king and established a royal cult of Linga to worship. Ling cult will remain central to the Angkor kings in religion, art and architecture for centuries.
